The report examines foreign direct investment (FDI) trends by all companies from India investing in Africa between January 2003 and July 2015.
The report includes estimated values on capital investment and the number of jobs created in cases where information was not available at project announcement.
Retail and inter-state projects are excluded from this report.
Summary
FDI projects peaked in 2011
Some 64 projects, or 16.7% of projects, were recorded in 2011. This was the year in which the highest numbers of projects were recorded. During this period a total of 29,859 jobs were created and USD 11.86 billion capital was invested by these projects, equating to a 29.7% and 21.5% of total jobs and capital investment respectively.
Key investors account for almost half of projects.
The top 10% of investors have created a total of 188 projects, 49% of the total projects. These investors have created a combined total of 50,788 jobs, which equates to the majority of the overall total. The combined capital investment from these companies reached USD 31.37 billion, equating to the majority of the total for all companies.
Financial Services is top sector with more than one-eighth of projects.
Out of a total of 31 sectors, Financial Services accounted for 14.1% of projects. Project volume in this sector peaked during 2011, with 10 projects tracked. Total jobs creation and capital investment in this sector was 1,149 jobs and USD 607.10 million respectively.
Largest projects originate in Dehradun
With an average project size of USD 1.08 billion, projects originating in Dehradun are approximately 7.5 times larger than the average across all source cities. Ranked eleventh in overall projects recorded with 6 in total, Dehradun created a total of 3,111 jobs and USD 6.50 billion capital investment.
Top five destinations attract the majority of projects.
Out of a total of 35 destination countries, the top five account for the majority of projects. South Africa is the top destination country accounting for one-fifth of projects tracked. Total investment into South Africa resulted in the creation of 9,541 jobs and USD 5.09 billion capital investment, equating to an average of 127 jobs and USD 67.80 million investment per project.
