Some research institutions insist that all papers should include a statement expressing gratitude to the director 'for permission to publish this paper'. Its ritual use diminishes the value of the statement. Most experienced researchers give little weight to such statements and often form a negative opinion of those who insist on its use. It is a pity that those who insist on the ritual do not recognise the harm it does.
