Your title may also be the means by which readers find your document. Apart from those who will read it at the head of the document itself, the title may appear in indexes, literature-retrieval systems and search engines. You should consider how these systems will be able to manage the title you propose. An improperly titled paper may be lost and never reach its intended audience.

Remember that, for indexing services, literature-retrieval systems and search engines, your title should contain key words: terms that highlight the important content of the paper in words that are understandable and retrievable.

In this section we look at:

  • Choosing the style of the title
  • Making the title specific
  • Keeping the title short
  • Making the title clear
