For technical flow charts there are conventions about the shape and style of each box. Ovals are used to show inputs (materials, information, actions) to start the process. Ovals are also used to show the results at the end of a process (outputs). Boxes or rectangles are generally used to show action or task performed in the process. A diamond shaped box is used to show where in the process a decision is required (e.g. yes or no).
