It's Time to Drop the New Issues!
On the opening day of the World Trade Organisation's Seattle summit, the World Development Movement (WDM) tells the EU that
it's time to drop the 'new issues' and start listening to developing countries.
Developing countries have been highly critical of the WTO's record and its procedures and have called for "review, repair
and reform" of WTO agreements before any new issues are added to its agenda. Preparations for the meeting have been fraught
as negotiators tried and failed to agree a draft of the Ministerial Declaration to be signed in Seattle. Almost the whole
of the statement is still contentious, and there is every likelihood of unbridgeable differences between the rich and poor
countries.
